Saudi Arabia is moving deeper into the global esports scene with HRH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman named as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Esports World Cup Foundation. This new role connects the Kingdom’s leadership directly with one of the fastest-growing industries worldwide.
The appointment makes the Crown Prince the official head of the Esports World Cup Foundation for a three-year term. This move gives him direct influence over the foundation’s strategy and vision, ensuring that Saudi Arabia’s esports initiatives align with broader national goals and international ambitions.
Although the foundation was presented as a non-profit supported by the Public Investment Fund, the Crown Prince’s leadership highlights the state’s deeper role. It reflects a strategy where government backing ensures stability, funding, and global recognition for the Esports World Cup.
As Chairman of Savvy Games Group, the Crown Prince already oversees a powerhouse in gaming that owns ESL FACEIT Group, one of the biggest organizers of global tournaments. This connection strengthens Saudi Arabia’s position as a central player in competitive gaming, both locally and worldwide.
The move comes alongside major acquisitions like Qiddiya’s purchase of Evo, the world’s top fighting game tournament organizer. These investments are part of a larger effort to expand Saudi Arabia’s entertainment portfolio and create a lasting footprint in global esports.
Saudi Arabia’s growing role in esports has drawn criticism from watchdogs who argue it is part of “sportswashing.” Concerns include human rights and political issues. Still, for the Kingdom, the esports push represents a forward-looking vision that focuses on growth, entertainment, and global influence.
The Crown Prince’s appointment confirms that esports is now at the core of Saudi Arabia’s cultural and economic strategy. With strong leadership and major investments, the Kingdom aims to position itself as a global hub for gaming and competitive entertainment.
