Ford V8 Hypercar Roars at Monza Ahead of Its 2027 Le Mans Comeback

01 Nov 2026
  • What makes the new Ford LMDh Hypercar engine so special?
  • How does the new Ford Hypercar continue the legacy of the iconic GT40?

The unmistakable sound of a powerful V8 engine is returning to the world of endurance racing, and Ford is making sure everyone hears it. In our latest Motor283 video, we take you to the legendary Monza circuit in Italy, where the American manufacturer has been testing its upcoming LMDh Hypercar ahead of its highly anticipated return to the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2027. Hidden beneath a striking camouflage design, the new racing machine delivers an incredible soundtrack as it accelerates through the historic circuit. With an advanced hybrid powertrain and a legendary racing heritage behind it, Ford is preparing for one of its most ambitious motorsport challenges yet.

The Sound of American V8 Performance

The Sound of American V8 Performance

At the heart of Ford's upcoming endurance racing machine sits a naturally aspirated 5.4 liter V8 engine derived from the famous Coyote architecture found in the Ford Mustang. However, this is no ordinary road car engine. Developed specifically for endurance racing, the powerplant features extensive modifications designed to withstand the demanding conditions of international competition.

Combined with a standardized hybrid system, the engine operates within the LMDh regulations, which generally limit combined power to approximately 670 horsepower, with performance further controlled through championship regulations.

In our video, the real highlight is the sound. As the camouflaged prototype charges through Monza, its powerful V8 produces an unmistakable mechanical roar that celebrates traditional American performance while embracing modern hybrid technology. Watch as the prototype tackles the circuit and listen to the soundtrack that could soon become one of the most recognizable sounds in endurance racing.

Ford Returns to Its Legendary Le Mans Heritage

Ford's decision to return to the highest level of endurance racing carries enormous historical significance. In 1966, the legendary Ford GT40 achieved an extraordinary victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, securing all three podium positions and beginning a remarkable streak of four consecutive overall victories through 1969.

Half a century later, Ford returned to Le Mans with the modern Ford GT, winning the LMGTE Pro category in 2016 and reminding the motorsport world of its racing heritage.

Now, the upcoming Hypercar represents another chapter in that story. Unlike the 2016 GT, which competed for class honors, the new LMDh prototype is being developed to fight for overall victory against some of the world's most established endurance racing manufacturers.

Following its testing sessions at Monza, Ford is continuing an extensive development program designed to prepare its new prototype for the challenges of endurance competition. The car uses an ORECA developed chassis combined with Ford's own V8 powertrain and advanced hybrid technology.

The official unveiling is scheduled for November 26, 2026, ahead of its planned racing debut at the Qatar 1812km event on March 27, 2027. From there, Ford will set its sights on the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans, where the manufacturer hopes to recreate the success that made the GT40 a motorsport legend.
