Rivian is preparing for one of the most important moments in its history as the R2 moves closer to customers. Positioned as a smaller and more affordable electric SUV, the R2 is expected to help the brand reach a much wider audience. Now, new comments from Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe suggest the story may be getting even more interesting with the possibility of additional versions joining the lineup in the future.
Rivian appears ready to explore more directions for the R2 platform beyond the currently known SUV models. During a recent interview, RJ Scaringe hinted that the company’s future plans could include multiple variations of the R2, possibly even a pickup truck version.
While he avoided revealing specific details, he confirmed that Rivian’s future production setup in Georgia was designed to support several combinations and configurations. This flexibility opens the door for new body styles that could attract different types of buyers looking for a practical and adventure focused electric vehicle.
For a brand already known for its electric trucks, introducing a smaller pickup based on the R2 could become a smart move in a growing market that wants more affordable EV options without sacrificing capability or personality.
Rivian is counting heavily on the R2 to boost sales and strengthen its position in the competitive electric vehicle market. The company expects a major increase in deliveries and believes the R2 could become one of its most successful products yet.
Part of that growth will also come from Rivian’s partnership with Uber, which plans to use fully autonomous R2 models for robotaxi services starting in 2028. This partnership gives the R2 an important role beyond personal transportation and places it at the center of Rivian’s future business strategy.
At the same time, many fans remain curious about the future of the stylish R3, a compact electric SUV inspired by classic hatchback designs from the 1980s. Rivian has stayed quiet about upcoming products for now, choosing instead to focus attention on the R2 launch and the beginning of customer deliveries this spring.
